name E'kayan Tia age 26 height 5'3" race Miqo'te (Seeker of the Sun) class Black Mage/Summoner, with some Red Mage and Scholar on the side. occupation Adventurer, Warrior of Light, Warrior of Darkness played at Seasons

history
To be added when I think of a good way to write it that isn't 200000 words long.
personality
E'kayan gives the first impression of a young Miqo'te who doesn't really have much of a care in the world, and who may or may not have two brain cells to rub together. He has a tendency to run his mouth just a little too far to convince anyone that he has any level of academic intelligence, however his ability to understand people and his emotional intelligence more than makes up for most of his shortcomings in that regard. The orange-haired adventurer is already ready with a smile and a calming word where it's needed and will always be the first to reach out to comfort someone who requires it, and he never has a complaint about fetching something for someone or passing a message on even if the person receiving it is literally thirty steps away.

He has always had a wide streak of independence when it comes to his actions but conversely, when his emotions are involved, he does tend to look towards others for approval and affirmation. This was displayed from a fairly early age when he would use small magic tricks to entertain the group of children and teenagers that he would spend most of his time with around Limsa Lominsa docks. An adept arcanist by his early teens, before he was even fully aware of what he was doing, he would utilise his skills to distract guards and cause general mischief around the docks.

When he caught the attention of K'rhid Tia and was brought to the Arcanist's Guild it gave him a sense of belonging and purpose that he had not had before. Although the Guildmaster was almost always absent he has always felt a sense of gratitude towards the other man for seeing potential in a street kid that may have otherwise gone entirely unnoticed.

Outside of the need for scholarly intellect, E'kayan is a bright, quick-minded person who takes to new things easily - be they magical or mechanical - as long as no one tries to over-explain them. It's far better to simply sit him in front of the situation and let him work it out for himself than to try to blind him with science. This has been a source of frustration for many people over the course of his life (not least X'rhun Tia, whom he almost provoked into an aneurysm while trying to learn Red magic) but the results that he comes up with if left to his own devices can't really be denied. He has grown better at sticking up for himself in this regard but can still sometimes be found blank-faced as someone tries to go in-depth to explain a concept that he doesn't understand.

It is - and has always been - difficult for him to say no to people when they need his help (and he can actually give it). It was this persistent altruism that first drew him into the Scions, and that resulted in a growing resentment towards Minfilia as she continually requested more and more of him while comparing him to a brand of heroism that he did not feel that he matched up to in the slightest. Though this is something that he later resolved within himself and forgave her for, seeing that she had never really had much of a choice either, he was never able to grow close to her because of it (though he did grow close to Ryne, for the same reasons). The amount of pressure put on him by early events in the story manifested in his personality as an intense fear of failure - something which resulted in him abandoning the use of healing magic almost entirely as he realised he did not want anyone to feel like they should rely on him for that.

He values his friends very highly and appreciates the individual qualities of everyone he knows, being very aware of their strengths and weaknesses and when and where he can turn to them to rely on them in certain situations. One could argue, and rightly so, that the only reason he is still alive through all the trials he has been through is that he never tries to forge ahead alone. E'kayan is very aware of his own shortcomings and will lean on the people around him to fill in the gaps, particularly when it comes to those that he knows are more academically intelligent than he is. He isn't someone who takes things that he's told with blind naivety but he can be led by a good liar and he will more often than not believe the words and follow the advice of people he knows are smarter than him. In E'kayan's case this really does go for most people and he does appreciate things like Alphinaud's analytical mind, Urianger's wisdom, G'raha's quick intellect and Y'shtola's sharp thinking in ways that he could not fully put into words.

Something that swiftly becomes evident about E'kayan if you cross him is that he is a very forgiving person. He will sometimes joke that a good many of his friends have tried to kill him (and it would not be entirely a lie) but he has even been able to forgive some people who perhaps did not really deserve such a kindness from him. One such person is Gaius Baelsar, a man that he became unexpectedly close to after discovering the truth behind the group of orphans that he had raised as well as seeing that he truly meant to make amends for all the harm that he had caused. In spite of everything he was able to give Gaius a chance to prove that he was trying to be better - that he would be better - and he does not expect that the other man is going to disappoint him. Though he can forgive easily he does not forget easily, and there are some few who will never be offered the kind of olive branch that he stretched out to the former Legatus.

Unsurprisingly, underneath the light and cheerful persona that most people see most of the time when it comes to this man, everything that he had been through since he first joined the Scions has left its mark. He went through an incredibly dark period between the massacre at the Waking Sands and the liberation of Ala Mhigo where he would barely say a word to anyone, having not had a moment of peace to be able to process anything that had happened to him in that time. It's only when he finally, truly saw the way that people were rallying around him, because of things that he did that he began to pick himself up and regain all the confidence that he had almost entirely lost and it was his journeys through the First that solidified this re-emergence of his old self. Though he would never be fully comfortable taking positions of leadership he learned to be mostly at ease with it when it happened, taking a lesson from Chai-Nuzz on that count and also from the Crystal Exarch, whom he looked up to all the more once it was confirmed that the man was in fact the boastful G'raha Tia from all that time ago.

Though he still carries a good deal of psychological weight even with the steps he has made to find ways to shoulder it more effectively he does not tend to like to burden other people with his problems. He is, unfortunately, a terrible liar but he will do his best to conceal when he's feeling bad or when something has triggered him into memories of events that he would rather not think about. Over time he has become very adept at changing the subject and making it clear when he doesn't want to talk about something, though he sometimes will open up when it's on his terms to be able to do so. It would probably be no surprise to anyone to learn that he hates being alone and he will often seek out company rather than sit by himself.

Those people who have known him longest have seen him go from a cheerful, naive young man to someone almost entirely locked inside his own head, and then back again to that same old open cheerfulness with the added confidence of experience and faith in his own abilities (and those of his friends). Always the first to offer a hand of friendship or reconciliation, someone who is open to hearing out even his worst enemy if they look like they might change their approach, and someone who will always look to his allies for help and support when he needs it with the full confidence that they will be there at his back. As he will always be at theirs.
abilities
SUMMONER; His first love and the magic style that comes the most easily to him. If he's asked to demonstrate magic he will almost always turn to Summoning first.

BLACK MAGE; As of the end of Shadowbringers, this is the style that he uses most often. It isn't the one that is the easiest for him to wield, but he found himself favouring it more and more after his return from the First.

RED MAGE; A magic style that he picked up following the conclusion of A Realm Reborn. He was immediately impressed with X'rhun Tia and also subconsciously saw in him the kind of mentor that he had always hoped K'rhid could be (but he never was). It was difficult for him to pick up initially, but easy to master once he had figured out how it worked.

SCHOLAR; A role that he used to enjoy even if he did not use it too often. E'kayan was able to develop the abilities of this lost art and discover much of the sad history behind it before he developed his aversion to demonstrating advanced healing magic that still keeps him from admitting he knows much about it at all.

ALCHEMIST; It only made sense considering his focus on magic. He can throw together simple potions in a pinch, but keeping large amounts of formulas in his head is really too much to ask. He has a lot of them written down.

BOTANIST, MINER, FISHER; E'kayan has a good amount of experience in all three, particularly the latter. Though he mostly engages in fishing and plant husbandry as a casual pasttime, they do come in handy for gathering alchemy reagents.
